Giving Every Child a Chance to Learn

For some children, going to school is simply part of growing up. They wake up, prepare for class, meet their friends and spend the day learning without having to think about whether there will be school fees, books or basic necessities waiting for them.

For a vulnerable child, however, getting an education can be much harder.

A child may be growing up without one or both parents. A family may be struggling to provide food and meet everyday needs. Sometimes the pressure at home becomes so great that school is no longer seen as a priority, even though the child has the ability and desire to learn.

This is one of the reasons education remains an important part of the work of Child Aid Foundation Uganda (CAFU).

CAFU works to support vulnerable children to access education and to create opportunities that allow them to develop their potential. The organisation's mission goes beyond simply getting a child into a classroom. It is about helping that child have a better chance at becoming confident, responsible and productive in the future.

Education is more than a classroom

A child who stays in school is gaining more than academic knowledge.

They are learning how to communicate, how to work with others, how to solve problems and how to imagine a future that may look very different from their present circumstances.

For children who have experienced loss, poverty or difficult family situations, staying connected to school can also provide a sense of stability and hope.

CAFU therefore places education among its key objectives, recognising that vulnerable children need support and opportunities if they are to reach their potential.

Supporting the child behind the student

CAFU's approach is rooted in understanding the circumstances surrounding vulnerable children. The organisation works with communities and other stakeholders because lasting change cannot come from supporting a child in isolation.

Families, schools, communities and local institutions all have a role to play.

CAFU works particularly with vulnerable communities in parts of Northern, Eastern and Western Uganda and identifies orphaned and vulnerable children, school-going children and other vulnerable groups among its priority rights holders.

A future starts with one opportunity

Sometimes what changes a child's future is not something complicated.

It can begin with the opportunity to remain in school.

It can begin with someone believing in that child.

It can begin with the right support arriving at the right time.

Through its education work, CAFU continues to create opportunities for vulnerable children to learn, grow and look beyond the difficulties they face today.

Because every child deserves more than a chance to survive. They deserve a chance to learn, dream and build a future.
