Change Begins When a Community Comes Together

A community knows its challenges.

It knows the families that are struggling. It knows the children who need support. It knows when a young person is losing hope and when a household needs someone to listen.

But knowing a problem exists is only the beginning.

Real change requires people to come together. This is why community sensitisation and charity are an important part of CAFU's work.

CAFU works with communities and local structures, alongside government and development partners, to ensure that interventions respond to the realities of the people they are intended to serve. The organisation also emphasises strengthening families and communities so that they can continue responding to local challenges even when direct project support ends.

Listening before acting

Good community work starts with listening.

Before deciding what a community needs, it is important to understand what people are already experiencing.

What is affecting families? What is keeping children out of school? What challenges are young people facing? Where are vulnerable people being left behind?

These questions help create interventions that are connected to real life rather than simply designed from a distance.

CAFU's work is focused on some of the most vulnerable communities and includes groups such as orphaned and vulnerable children, women-headed households, young people, persons with disabilities and people living with HIV/AIDS.

Charity is about more than giving

Giving matters.

A donation can help provide support where it is needed most. But lasting charity is also about building relationships, creating opportunities and helping people become less vulnerable over time.

CAFU describes its supporters as partners because the relationship goes beyond a single donation. The organisation also looks at sustainability through partnerships, community structures and social entrepreneurship.
