Our Story

The worsening situation of orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) in Uganda is a growing global concern. Children make up 54% of Uganda's population, of which 14% are orphans (UNHS, 2019/2020).

Orphans and other vulnerable children in Uganda face multiple challenges, including educational discontinuity, poor nutrition, discrimination, social stigma, separation from siblings, material deprivation, extreme anxiety, and a lack of health care and psychological support. They also face alarmingly high rates of malnutrition and are far more likely to drop out of school.

CAFU was founded in 2012 by one of its directors, who was orphaned at the age of five and supported by the Strømme Foundation to complete a good education. Drawing on that experience, CAFU was established with the vision of transforming the lives of vulnerable children and helping them maximise their potential to rise into productive, responsible and resourceful citizens of the nation.

Child Aid Foundation Uganda (CAFU) champions the transformation of the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in Uganda through a series of interventions — including, but not limited to, social entrepreneurship.
